Garcia & Sims pilot the # 3 Corvette to 2nd place in a wild race on the streets of Detroit
The 100-minute IMSA Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic race on the 1.654-mile street circuit on Saturday May 31 in MOTOWN set the stage for a 2-hour INDY Car race on Sunday June 1, a week after the Indianapolis 500.
The Pratt & Miller # 3 and # 4 Z06 GT3.R Corvettes of Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg topped the charts in practice but as qualifying began, a stoppage, resumed by a wrongly-placed pace car relegated them to 8th & 10th as time ran out.
To deal with that “bummer” and gain track position, the Corvettes opted to pit later in the race, off-sequence from the field and only to re-fuel.
The strategy paid off as Sims took over from Garcia and finished 2nd in IMSA GTD PRO behind Sebastian Priaulx and Mike Rockenfeller their very fast # 64 Ford Multimatic “Dark Horse” Mustang GT3.
Catsburg in the # 4 Corvette collided on the last lap with Klaus Bachler in the # 77 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 (992) a/k/a T-Rex and was scored 6th after being penalized.
Garcia and Sims in their # 3 Corvette are closing in on the # 77 on GTD PRO points going into the 6-hour race on June 29 at Watkins Glen where the GTD Corvettes of AWA and DXDT will join the fray.
