Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity: Corvette Racing Team scores fourth straight win at VIR
Antonio Garcia # 3 Corvette was first across the line and first overall (VIR for GT cars only) in the 5th round of the IMSA WeatherTech championship.
This victory came down to which team made the fewest mistakes.
Garcia was able to strike for the win because Jordan Taylor kept the leading Porsches 911 RSRs well in sight during his long 2-hour stint.
Stopping to replace a left rear tire that gave up underneath Nick Tandy in the # 911 pole-sitting Porsche 911 RSR just 18 min from the end cost Porsche the race. Co-driver Fred Makowkecki had rebounded from an earlier left-rear puncture to take over the lead, thanks to a fuel-only stop during the race’s second full course caution.
Garcia held on to the extend their championship lead even though his rear diffuser was flopping from the undertray. Action here: https://twitter.com/i/status/1297277859942342658
Given a 200 lb weight penalty, both Corvettes were on pace until # 4 Oliver Gavin had a rare lapse going off course exiting the hog pen turn a bit too fast.
Tommy Milner finished up in 4th out of 6 cars in the GTLM field.
BMW veteran Bill Auberlin notched his 61st victory in the GTD class, passing Scott Pruitt for all-time series wins.
The GTD field consisted of 14 cars from eight (8) different manufacturers.
What lies ahead? The C8.R Corvette could retreat to GTD next year with the loss of Porsche leaving BMW the only opponent in GTLM.
