Callaway Competition bounces back at Sachsenring
Sachsenring looks like an inviting circuit in East Germany, even under the Stasi in the aftermath of WWII. Most recently on Sunday Oct 4, 2020 Sachsenring was one happy scene for Corvette fans.
After a horribly unlucky outing at Hockenheim, the Callaway Competition # 77 C7 GT3-R of Marcus Pommer and Jeffrey Schmidt was declared the winner of a wild race at Sachsenring that almost defies description.
It all started with the green flag as four cars jumped pole-sitter Dennis Marschall in the # 24 Rutronic Racing Audi R8. That helped Schmidt move up from 6th to 3rd. An 11-car crash in the back of the field brought out the first of 2 caution flags during the race.
After the driver change, Pommer was hot on the tail of Albert Costa Balboa in the leading # 63 GRT Grasser Lambo Hurrican. Officials earlier spotted his co-driver Frank Percera passing the safety car, a blunder that set them back to 10th place by virtue of a 30 second penalty.
Callaway Competition became a winner for the first time this season.
The Callaway C7 GT3-R was dialed in and ready on Saturday, qualifying just 0.549 seconds off the pace and overtaking 5 cars to finish a decent 8th in a 33-car field.
The winner was # 36 DLV Schutz Motorsport AMG driven by Marvin Dienst & Philipp Frommenweiler.
