Corvettes top a big Group 6 -12A field in the SVRA U.S. Vintage National Championship Races at CoTA
Improv scheduling did not put a damper on the SVRA 2020 national championships that culminate on the avant-garde CoTA F1 circuit on the outskirts of Austin TX.
# 05 Scott Borchetta 1972 big block Corvette won both the feature and championship races, outpacing # 69 Dave Kunicki 1969 big block Corvette by more than 2 seconds per lap. With performance upgrades in mind, Scott commissioned Ray Evernham’s Big Iron Garage in Mooresville NC.
(Note: Ray Evernham, former Jeff Gordon NASCAR crew chief and Dodge team owner was busy racing his hot # 19 1965 big block at the HSR Classic at Daytona. See separate report).
# 16 Steve Cole 1969 ex Doug Rippie Corvette topped the small block class, pursued by # 64 Jim Heck’s 1964, re-built by Duntov Motors and dialed in for better handling. On board video (25 min) https://youtu.be/vL_2VONO9lU
# 26 Rick Ortman 1988 won his class for cars prepared to C4 SCCA Club Racing specs of that era.
# 98 pro Jade Buford and Scott Borchetta 1969 (ex Kurt Wetzel’s small block Corvette raced in Europe) were poised to win their Enduro class in before a mechanical problem forced them out.
CoTA was the maiden outing of # 8 ex club racer Gary Sullivan 1968 SCCA AP Corvette, discovered and restored by JP Griffith.
In Group 10, Michael Zoch’s rather unique bodied C4 1996 tube frame GT1 also made its first appearance. On board video (5 min)
