Strange Happenings on 2020 Halloween Weekend at Lausitzring
It was a dark and dreary weekend. No spectators were allowed. The track was wet and visibility was awful. Marcus Pommer qualified the # 77 Callaway C7-GT3R 17th, about 0.18 seconds off the pace.
The boys took advantage of spins, off-track excursions & yellow flags to finish 8th.
# 28 Christopher Haase & Max Hofer, Montaplast by Land Motorsport Audi R8 LMS won the race starting from 6th on the grid.
On Sunday Jeffrey Schmidt qualified a remarkable 2nd, just 0.12 seconds off. The engineers bet the track would dry out so they dropped the tyre pressures and went all out for the win. The gamble backfired.
The track never dried, the tyres never warmed up and lack of grip cost Jeffrey several positions by the drivers change.
They added air and Marcus was holding his position before he got spun out by an over-aggressive Lambo losing 10 spots and recovering 3 to finish 18th.
Pulling off a strange coup # 20 Dorian Boccalacci & Mick Wishofer (relative newcomers) in the Team BKK Mobil Oil Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo won the race starting way back from 17th.
The ADAC-GT Masters series visited Lausitzring for the second time because travel to Zandvoort in the Netherlands was restricted. Back in 2001, Indy star Alex Zanardi lost his legs and luckily survived a brutal crash on the hi speed tri-oval. The infield road circuit is now the primary configuration. In 2017, DEKRA, a huge auto testing company bought the Lausitzring to host racing and test autonomous cars.
