Disappointment at the Nurburgring
After sweeping in Austria, the Callaway team received a BOP air restriction of 2mm that cost about 35 hp per team principal Ernst Woehr. They nonetheless hoped to keep pace with improved aero and chassis setup. Then things began to go wrong.
On Saturday the green light came on late and Marvin Kirchoffer, gridded 7th could not brake in time and hit the Audi of Sheldon van der Lind. He served a drive-through penalty but the damage forced the team to withdraw the C7 GT3-R.
On Sunday, Daniel Keilwitz, gridded 10th leaped to 3rd via an incredible start. Even though restricted power held him back, the team felt that Marvin had a good shot to win after the driver switch.
Unfortunately, the alternator failed before he got that chance and the C7 GT3-R was withdrawn again. Hard to explain as it was a new part installed this year from a long-time vendor in the UK.
Callaway holds a 1-point lead in the standings and expects better results Aug 17-19 at Zandvoort.
The # 47 AMG of Markus Pommer and Maximilian Gotz is second.
Candid assessment, no excuses courtesy of Callaway Team Principal Ernst Woehr.
Thanks to Tyler Thurn for timely updates and photos.
# 13 Sven Barth and Claudia Huertgens shared the only Corvette that made it through the weekend finishing 19th on Sunday.
