Callaway Team finishes 2nd in Season Opener at Oschersleben
Jules Gounon wins second place in Sunday’s race at the Oschersleben arena.
Starting third in the # 77 Corvette Callaway C7 GT3-R, Daniel Keilwitz closely tailed Sven Muller in the # 99 Porsche. Gounon gained one track position to finish 2nd after the driver switch. It was a well-earned result recovering from the previous day’s DNF.
Having qualified 3rd on Saturday, Gounon got crashed out early by Marcus Pommer’s # 3 Audi on just the third lap.
Since the ADAC GT Masters adopted its current format 10 years ago, no team has remained as faithful as Callaway Competition; and no others have been more successful. There is qualifying and one-hour races on Saturday and Sunday with a mandatory pit stop to change drivers. Callaway races American “muscle car” Corvettes in fields stacked with Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Lamborghini and Nissan. Their tally so far is 24 race wins (the most in the ADAC GT Masters) one drivers’ title and one team title. Pirelli is the official tyre. Keilwitz 18 wins are more than any other driver.
Gerd Beisel’s RWT debuted its # 13 C7 GT3-R. It is the 4th C7 GT3 R chassis. Sven Barth and new driver Maximilian Hacklander qualified 11th on Saturday but fell back to finish 22nd. They were a victim of an incident that put them out of the race on Sunday.
After a promising start, Callaway team heads to Lausitzring on May 20-21.
