Joining with Action Express pays off for Whelen Team Fox with win at Elkhart Lake’s Road America
Team manager Gary Nelson gave orders to “let ‘em race” as Christian Fittipaldi (# 5 AX) got side-by-side with young Dane Cameron (# 31 Whelen) through turn 1 as the race wound down.
The outcome was a win for Cameron and veteran Eric Curran at Road America following second place at Mosport. Chalk it up to thorough preparation, good pit stop strategy, a talented new driver and possibly a brake issue that delayed the # 5.
AX finished 2nd, # 90 SDR 5th and misfortune put the # 10 Wayne Taylor Racing 3 laps down back in 8th place.
Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen driving the now repaired # 3 Corvette C7.R 003 that was badly damaged at Le Mans emerged 4th keeping pace with BMW in the GTLM points standings. Nobody could match the speed of the # 911 & # 912 Porsches that finished 1-2 well ahead of the rest.
Weather Tech takes over as new title sponsor from Tudor effective Nov 1, 2015. David MacNeil’s high profile-high horsepower marketing machine promises more fan exposure as Tudor (Rolex) remains a fixture with the international crowd at Daytona and Sebring. Weather Tech sponsors an Alex Job Porsche for son Cooper MacNeil in the GTD Class.
IMSA announced that GTD cars in 2016 will conform to global FIA GT3 specs, joining the ranks of the SCCA World Challenge and the German ADAC-GT series. Might this be the perfect inroad for teams to race the new Callaway C7 GT3 Corvettes in GTD? Now THAT would bring more fans.
