C2 - FIA, # 6, 9 Roger Penske Racing - Sunoco 1966
At the end of 1965 when Roger Penske needed to borrow money to buy a coveted Cheve dealership, his bank required him to give up driving. At age 28 he formed a racing team and quickly found sponsorship from the Sun Oil Company. Using his connections with Chevrolet he ordered this race optioned (heater delete) L88 big block Corvette. At Duntov's recommendation he hired standout CA racer Dick Guldstrand to fly to St Louis pick it up the car at the factory and drive it to his Philadelphia shop in the dead of winter. Guldstrand helped prepare the car.and co-drove it with George Wintersteen and Ben Moore to class wins at Daytona and Sebring. Kevin Mackay of Corvette Repair later acquired it from the late Dale Phelon, a wealthy scion. The car is meticulously restored and has been widely displayed for years.
